2026 WCQ: The three strikers who deserve to be named in Eric Chelle's first Super Eagles squad
Published: February 10, 2025
As Nigeria gears up for the crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe in March, Eric Chelle is finalizing his first squad selection as Nigeria's head coach.
Chelle has been actively touring around Europe and familiarizing himself with Nigerian players for a potential call-ups as he prepares to open camp.
With the Super Eagles sitting in a precarious fifth place in Group C—four points behind leaders Rwanda and South Africa—the team must secure victories in their upcoming fixtures to keep their qualification hopes alive.
While established forwards like Victor Osimhen, Victor Boniface, and Ademola Lookman are expected to be included, allnigeriasoccer.com provides three strikers who have made a strong case for selection:
Tolu Arokodare (Genk, Belgium)
Arguably Nigeria’s most in-form striker in Europe this season, Arokodare has been exceptional for Belgian side Genk.
The 24-year-old has netted 16 goals and provided seven assists in 30 matches, demonstrating his ability to deliver consistently.
His physical presence and finishing prowess could provide an alternative attacking option for the Super Eagles.
Cyriel Dessers (Rangers, Scotland)
After a turbulent period that saw him linked with a winter transfer, Dessers has regained his form at Rangers.
The 30-year-old has been pivotal for the Scottish club, scoring a hat-trick in the Scottish Cup against Fraserburgh FC and finding the net against Manchester United in the Europa League.
With 18 goals and six assists in 37 appearances, Dessers deserves serious consideration, especially as Taiwo Awoniyi, Paul Onuachu, and Samuel Chukwueze struggle for form at their clubs.
Chuba Akpom (Lille, France)
The former Arsenal youth prospect endured a difficult spell at Ajax before making a winter switch to Lille, a move aimed at reviving his career.
Akpom has already made an impact, scoring on his debut against Le Havre.
His technical ability and versatility could be valuable assets for Chelle’s squad as Nigeria looks to strengthen its attacking options.
