Dele-Bashiru gets the nod: Former Lazio ace prefers him over Barcelona legend to replace injured Dia
Published: February 12, 2025
Former Lazio midfielder Roberto Rambaudi has weighed in on the selection dilemma between Barcelona legend Pedro Rodríguez and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru as a replacement for the injured Boulaye Dia ahead of Lazio’s crucial Serie A clash against Napoli on Saturday.
Speaking on radiosei.it, Rambaudi endorsed Dele-Bashiru for a starting role in the attacking midfield position, following his impressive performance in Lazio’s 5-1 demolition of Monza last Sunday.
The Nigerian international capped off the dominant display with Lazio’s fifth goal, unleashing a powerful shot into the top corner after skillfully maneuvering past defenders inside the box.
Dele-Bashiru’s latest goal takes his tally to three in the Serie A this season, marking a notable improvement in his adaptation to Italian football following a slow start after joining from Hatayspor in the summer.
Rambaudi highlighted the tactical challenges Lazio will face against Napoli, emphasizing the importance of a balanced attack and midfield presence.
"Obviously it will be a difficult match, Napoli closes well, is organized, and knows how to strike upfront. In addition, McTominay and Anguissa know how to fill the area well," Rambaudi said.
When asked who should start between Pedro and Dele-Bashiru, the former Lazio star was clear in his preference; "Pedro or Dele-Bashiru from the first minute instead of Dia? I would put Dele."
Dele-Bashiru will be hoping to start against the league leaders, as it offers him the opportunity to showcase his talent right from the first whistle.
Pedro is considered a bona fide Barcelona legend, having won five La Liga titles, the Champions League three times, as well as the Copa del Rey, Supercopa de España, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup during his 11-year spell with the club.
