2025 Afcon draw fallout: Egypt FA pulls plug on proposed friendlies against Flying Eagles
Published: February 14, 2025
Allnigeriasoccer.com has been told that the Egypt Football Association has cancelled the proposed friendly matches between their U20 team and the Flying Eagles following the 2025 Africa U20 Cup of Nations draw, which placed both countries in the same group.
The Flying Eagles were due to face Egypt in a two-legged clash in Cairo, with the first encounter scheduled for February 25 and the second for February 27, but both games have been called off.
Nigeria will play in Group B of the 2025 Africa U20 Cup of Nations where they will face former champions Egypt and Morocco as well as South Africa.
In Group A, hosts Côte d'Ivoire will take on DR Congo, Ghana, Tanzania, and a second representative from the UNIFFAC region, while Senegal, Zambia, Kenya and Sierra Leone are in Group C.
Ahead of the tournament in Ivory Coast, the Nigeria Football Federation is exploring the possibility of arranging a friendly with a team that is not in the Flying Eagles' group.
The invited foreign-based players for the friendlies against Egypt have been instructed not to make the journey to Cairo.
The teams that reach the semifinals of the 2025 U20 Afcon will secure their spots at the Fifa U20 World Cup in Chile later this year.
Flying Eagles coach Aliyu Zubairu has called up thirty home-based players for a training camp before the tournament in Ivory Coast.
