SC Freiburg goalkeeper Atubolu chases two Bundesliga records before international break
Published: February 28, 2025
SC Freiburg goalkeeper Noah Atubolu is chasing two Bundesliga records before the international break in March.
For the first time since 2014, the Germany U21 international became the only goalkeeper to save four penalties in a row, equaling the feat of former Bayer Leverkusen glovesman Bernd Leno.
Atubolu also followed in the footsteps of some former exceptional goalkeepers in the Bundesliga, including Frank Rost (2007), Hans Jörg Butt (2000) and Thomas Zander (1980) who all achieved the feat in the past.
According to RedaktionsNetzwerk Deutschland, Atubolu is the only one of the group of five who is still active in the Bundesliga and therefore the only one who could set a new record on Sunday when SC Freiburg travel to Frank Onyeka's Augsburg.
Atubolu is also on course for another record, having gone 400 consecutive minutes without conceding a goal.
Since Min-jae Kim found the net in the 54th minute of Bayern's 2-1 win over SC Freiburg, Atubolu has posted four consecutive clean sheets in the Bundesliga.
The dual-national goalkeeper is just 110 minutes away from replacing Richard Golz (2000-2001) as the SC Freiburg goalkeeper with the longest streak of not conceding a goal in the Bundesliga.
In his 20 Bundesliga appearances this season, Atubolu kept eight clean sheets, with his 40 percent clean sheet rate bettered only by Péter Gulácsi (50 percent) and Manuel Neuer (57.9 percent).
