Super Eagles-eligible GK 20 minutes away from breaking Freiburg's Bundesliga clean sheet record
Published: March 04, 2025
Super Eagles-eligible goalkeeper Noah Atubolu is on the verge of making history with Freiburg as he inches closer to breaking the club's clean sheet record in the Bundesliga.
The 22-year-old shot-stopper has been in outstanding form, keeping five consecutive clean sheets in recent matches. Atubolu has shut out opponents in games against VfL Bochum, FC Heidenheim, FC St. Pauli, SV Werder Bremen and FC Augsburg.
This impressive streak has seen him accumulate 490 minutes without conceding a goal, putting him just 20 minutes away from surpassing Freiburg’s all-time Bundesliga clean sheet record, set by Richard Golz in the 2000/01 season at 510 minutes.
The young goalkeeper will have the opportunity to etch his name in Freiburg’s history books when the team faces RB Leipzig in their next league fixture.
Speaking ahead of the crucial game, Atubolu expressed his confidence and determination.
"I think there are worse situations. We're going to approach the game the same way. Full speed ahead and we definitely want to win," announced Atubolu," Atubolu was quoted as saying by Kicker.
Atubolu has been a standout performer for Freiburg this season, conceding 29 goals and registering nine clean sheets in 21 Bundesliga matches.
His consistency has been vital for Freiburg’s campaign as they push for European qualification.
Despite representing Germany at various youth levels, Atubolu remains eligible to play for Nigeria, as he is yet to make an official senior appearance for the German national team.
His stellar performances have drawn attention from both nations, with Nigerian fans hopeful that he may choose to represent the Super Eagles in the future.
