'It is unfair' - Former Super Eagles star questions Chelle over Nottingham Forest striker snub
Published: March 05, 2025
Former Super Eagles defender Sam Elijah has criticized Nigerian national team coach Eric Chelle for excluding striker Taiwo Awoniyi from the provisional squad for the 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe.
Chelle on Tuesday announced a 39-man squad for the upcoming matches in Kigali and Uyo, including notable names like Victor Osimhen, Victor Boniface, Ahmed Musa, Ademola Lookman, and Umar Sadiq.
However, Awoniyi was a surprising omission, a decision Elijah finds unjustifiable.
In an interview with allnigeriasoccer.com, Elijah expressed disappointment, emphasizing Awoniyi's longstanding presence in the national team and his contributions when given the opportunity.
"It is not justified. Sincerely to exclude Taiwo Awoniyi, who has been part of the team for a very long time," Elijah said.
"He didn't have the chance to express himself, unfortunately he was ruled out due to injuries. But when he was invited to play for his country, he has made his marks.
“And how can you call up thirty-nine players without Taiwo Awoniyi, who has been part of the team for a long time - to me it is unfair."
Elijah however backed the decision to recall veteran forward Ahmed Musa, praising his leadership and experience.
"Well I think in my own opinion, inviting Ahmed Musa back to the national team is a good one."
"Ahmed Musa has been a very great motivator to the team and he is a very highly experienced and discipline player.
"For the new the gaffer to call him, he must have seen something in him. Although Ahmed Musa might not be playing in Europe again, but he is playing in one of the top club sides in Nigeria.
"In Nigeria, he has made a lot of impact. He has scored many goals and also influenced the team (Kano Pillars). It is a good moment for him, he can bring his experience to play in the matches and to also motivates others."
