Balogun's fitness: What Rangers coach said before UEL showdown against Mourinho's Fenerbahce
Published: March 06, 2025
Rangers manager Barry Ferguson has provided insight into the potential availability of Leon Balogun and John Souttar for their UEFA Europa League clash against Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahce.
Balogun, who had been sidelined since late January, made his return during Rangers’ 2-1 defeat to Motherwell.
The Nigerian international missed five league games against Dundee United, Ross County, Hearts, St. Mirren, and Kilmarnock during his absence.
Meanwhile, his defensive partner, John Souttar, has not featured since the 3-1 win over Hearts two weeks ago.
Speaking ahead of the crucial last-16 encounter in Istanbul, Ferguson expressed optimism about their participation.
"John Souttar and Leon Balogun both trained again today (on Wednesday)," Ferguson was quoted as saying by Rangers Review.
"I need to wait to see how they react to training today. Hopefully, [they'll be] available tomorrow (Thursday) night."
Balogun, despite being 36, has been a key player for Rangers, forming a strong defensive partnership with Souttar.
Beyond his defensive contributions, he has also played a role in attack, scoring once and providing an assist in 20 appearances across all competitions.
Rangers are already in Istanbul as they prepare for the first leg of their Europa League round-of-16 tie against Fenerbahce, hoping to secure a positive result before the return leg in Glasgow.
