Iheanacho snubbed Derby County loan move to seal Middlesbrough switch in winter market

Nigerian forward Kelechi Iheanacho rejected a loan move to Derby County before sealing a switch to Middlesbrough during the last winter transfer window, according to Telegraph UK.

The former Leicester City striker, who struggled for game time at Sevilla, opted for a return to English football with Michael Carrick’s side as they pushed for a Championship play-off spot.

Derby County had expressed strong interest in signing Iheanacho as they sought to strengthen their attack in their bid to avoid relegation. 

The Rams saw the Nigerian international as an ideal addition to provide experience and quality in the final third, but Iheanacho prioritized a move to Boro. 

Middlesbrough emerged as a more appealing option. The opportunity to work under Michael Carrick played a key role in his decision to reject Derby County and join Boro.

Iheanacho had joined Sevilla on a free transfer last summer after leaving Leicester City, where he spent seven years and won the FA Cup. 

However, his time in La Liga proved difficult, as he found himself on the fringes of the squad. 

Sevilla’s playing style did not suit his strengths, and he struggled for minutes under manager García Pimienta.

With limited game time and no goals to his name, Iheanacho sought a move away in January. Several clubs showed interest, but the Nigerian was determined to find the right fit.

Middlesbrough, needing attacking reinforcements, moved quickly to secure Iheanacho’s services. 

With injuries and inconsistency affecting their frontline, the addition of a proven goal scorer was seen as a crucial boost.

Iheanacho’s experience in English football, including spells in the Premier League and Championship, made him a valuable addition to Boro’s squad. 

His arrival added depth and quality to the team’s attack, increasing their chances of securing a promotion spot.

By choosing Middlesbrough over Derby County, Iheanacho ensured he remained at a competitive level, giving himself the best chance to revive his career and contribute meaningfully in English football once again.
