South Africa 1 Nigeria 3: Chidi steals the show with brace, Moshood on target too for Flamingos
Published: March 08, 2025
The Nigerian U17 women's team, Flamingos, claimed a 3-1 victory over South Africa's Bantwana in the first leg of their 2025 FIFA U17 Women's World Cup qualifier at Lucas Moripe Stadium in Pretoria.
Shakirat Moshood opened the scoring for Nigeria in the 20th minute after a spell of early dominance and control.
Four minutes before halftime, Chidi Harmony doubled the lead with a composed finish from the penalty spot, silencing the home crowd as Nigeria entered the break with a two-goal advantage.
South Africa responded quickly after the restart, earning a penalty just two minutes into the second half.
Malebana converted from the spot, beating Nigerian goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma to cut the deficit.
Despite mounting pressure from Bantwana in search of an equalizer, Nigeria struck again in the 68th minute. Chidi Harmony secured her brace with a clinical finish, showcasing her composure and striker’s instinct to restore Nigeria’s two-goal cushion.
The win gives Nigeria a strong advantage heading into the second leg at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne on Saturday, March 15.
A positive result on aggregate would see the Flamingos advance to the third round of the qualifiers.
South Africa qualified in emphatic fashion for the second round with a 21-2 aggregate victory over Gabon.
