'In terms of chances missed' - Moore highlights similarities between Dessers and Celtic forward
Published: March 11, 2025
Former Rangers defender Craig Moore has drawn intriguing parallels between Celtic's Daizen Maeda and Nigerian International Cyriel Dessers, particularly regarding their attacking attributes.
In a recent analysis on Go Radio, Moore examined Maeda's performance, noting both players share a tendency to miss scoring opportunities, despite their effectiveness on the pitch.
Moore praised Maeda's current confidence and his ability to find himself in goal-scoring positions, emphasizing that these qualities are essential for success in the game.
"His confidence now is through the roof. He can score goals and he did do it at Yokohama as Brendan [Rodgers] touched on. When you look at him he is not technically brilliant," Moore was quoted as saying by Daily Record.
"He's not individual skill that is going to stand you up, jink, come in and step over. But he is just unbelievably effective."
However, Moore also acknowledged a potential downside, comparing Maeda's missed chances to those of Dessers.
"But like a little bit [Cyriel] Dessers in terms of the chances that are missed. That is a possibility for Maeda. But he's going to be there in positions to score more times than not."
On the other hand, Dessers, who faced challenges this campaign with Rangers, is currently enjoying a resurgence in form under new manager Barren Ferguson.
The Nigerian international has netted four goals and provided an assist in his last three matches across all competitions, reinforcing his position as a key player for his team.
This impressive form has also caught the attention of Eric Chelle, the Super Eagles coach, earning Dessers a spot on the Super Eagles' provisional list ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe.
