'He feels Danish' - Denmark coach confident Man Utd striker Chido Obi will snub Nigeria
Published: March 11, 2025
Denmark national team coach, Brian Riemer is confident that Manchester United striker Chido Obi will commit his international future at senior level to Denmark, rather than three-time African champions Nigeria.
Born in Glostrup, he qualifies to play for the Super Eagles through his Nigerian father Prince Obi.
Obi was omitted from Denmark's squad for the upcoming fixtures against Portugal in the Nations League quarter-final on Tuesday.
The 17-year-old has become part of Manchester United's first team in recent weeks, making debuts in the Premier League and FA Cup, and has so far represented Denmark at U16, U17 and U18 level.
Brian Riemer has taken notice, mentioning it while discussing Tuesday’s squad selection, saying he is in talks with the former Arsenal schoolboy.
In quotes relayed by Bold.dk, he stated: "I have had conversations with him, and there has been ongoing dialogue with my colleagues in the DBU.
"He is a super exciting place, and we have praised him and patted him on the back.
"When you are 17 years old and can play for Manchester United, you should be praised."
Obi was not included in the 23-man squad for the two Nations League matches against Portugal.
However, Brian Riemer insists they will closely monitor the talented player, who remains eligible to represent Nigeria due to his background.
"On the Danish A-team, you want to play consistently, so the next step for him is to stick with Manchester United.
"But he is a player that we do a lot to follow closely, and we see him having an exciting future in Danish national football. We are doing a lot to keep him in Danish national football.
"Fortunately, he is a good kid who also feels Danish, so a lot is being done across the national team and management," says Brian Riemer.
The Danish Football Association won the recruitment battle for Obi's Manchester United teammate Patrick Dorgu, Bournemouth loanee Philip Billing and Portland Thorns centre-back Isabella Obaze.
