Super Eagles roster update: Gent CB called up to replace injured Leverkusen forward Tella
Published: March 13, 2025
Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has named Jordan Torunarigha as a replacement for Bayer Leverkusen forward Nathan Tella, who has been ruled out due to a muscular injury.
Tella, who has been in fine form for the Bundesliga champions, sustained the injury ahead of Leverkusen’s 2-0 defeat to Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night.
According to Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso, the injury could also sideline him for the upcoming league clash against Stuttgart on Sunday.
With the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe fast approaching, Chelle has opted to bring in Torunarigha to reinforce the squad.
The 27-year-old initially made the 39-man provisional list but was omitted from the final 23-man squad.
Torunarigha has been a key player for Genk this season, excelling both defensively and offensively.
The Chemnitz-born defender has featured in 33 matches across all competitions, providing one assist while contributing to Gent’s solid defensive record.
His inclusion is expected to add depth and experience to Nigeria’s backline.
Meanwhile, Tella’s absence is a significant blow for Chelle, given his versatility and attacking contributions for Leverkusen.
The 25-year-old has been involved in seven goals across all competitions and is capable of playing multiple positions in attack.
Nigeria will first travel to Kigali to face Rwanda before hosting Zimbabwe in Uyo as they seek to improve their position in Group C and strengthen their chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
