2026 World Cup qualifiers: Sevilla blocked Akor Adams from getting first Nigeria call-up
Published: March 14, 2025
La Liga club Sevilla prevented Akor Adams from receiving his first ever Nigeria call-up for the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda's Wasps and Zimbabwe's Warriors, according to reports.
Adams and his Sevilla teammate, Chidera Ejuke, were originally named in the provisional squad but were later dropped from the final 23-man list announced by the Nigeria Football Federation earlier this week.
Former Nigeria U20 international Adams sealed a permanent move to the Rojiblancos in the January transfer window, but has struggled with fitness problems since his arrival in the Andalusian province.
Since making his debut off the bench against Getafe on February 1, 2025, the striker has not figured for Sevilla due to a hamstring issue.
Estadio Deportivo says Sevilla intervened to block Adams' potential inclusion in Nigeria's 23-man squad, citing his injury, which has sidelined him for over a month, and his delayed return to team training originally scheduled for this week.
Sevilla's official media confirmed this, disclosing that negotiations took place with the Nigerian Federation to inform them of the striker's injury concerns, ultimately leading to a mutual agreement.
The former Lillestrom goal poacher was a member of the Flying Eagles squad to the 2019 Fifa U20 World Cup in Poland, where he played in two games against Qatar and the United States.
Before his move to Sevilla, Adams appeared in sixteen games across all competitions for Montpellier, scoring three goals while producing an assist.
