Moses Simon silences doubters: Nantes forward provides game-winning assist amid injury concerns
Published: March 15, 2025
Moses Simon has put to rest speculation about his availability for the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifying matches against Rwanda's Wasps and Zimbabwe's Warriors after playing for ninety minutes in Nantes' 1-0 win against Chuba Akpom's Lille in a Ligue 1 encounter at the Stade de la Beaujoire on Saturday evening.
The major talking point ahead of the game had to do with the fitness of the Nigeria international, with Nantes manager Antoine Kombouaré admitting that the number 27 is not in tiptop condition which affects his performances on the pitch.
Before the visit of Lille, Simon spent several days receiving treatment and working in the gym.
Last weekend, the Super Eagles star entered the game as a substitute as Nantes were beaten by Strasbourg, playing the last nineteen minutes.
The after-effects of an injury suffered in March 2024 continue to trouble Simon, who originally fractured his fibula during Nigeria's match against Mali and has been experiencing persistent ankle pain ever since.
After two consecutive defeats in the division, Simon played a key role as Nantes returned to winning ways by providing the game-winning assist.
With seven minutes left on the clock, Simon, operating on the left flank, showcased his pace and skill to outmaneuver his marker before whipping in a precise cross to Mostafa Mohamed, who nodded it past goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier.
Despite concerns about his fitness, the GBS Academy product has been a major offensive asset for Nantes this term, tallying six goals and eight assists in twenty-four Ligue 1 games.
