'Ndidi right in front of him' - Hargreaves points finger at Leicester midfielder for Garnacho's goal
Published: March 17, 2025
Former Red Devils midfielder Owen Hargreaves has criticized Wilfred Ndidi for the role he played in the build-up to Alejandro Garnacho's goal during Leicester City's 3-0 defeat to Manchester United at the King Power Stadium on Sunday night.
The Foxes are now nine points from safety after their sixth consecutive loss in the Premier League.
Rasmus Højlund, of all people, blasted the ball into the bottom corner to break the deadlock in the 28th minute, giving the visitors a one-goal lead at half-time to end a 21-game goal drought.
Around the midway point of the second half, Garnacho also ended his goal drought as he unleashed a snap-shot that sneaked past Mads Hermansen at his near post, before Bruno Fernandes wrapped up the scoring in the 90th minute.
Speaking on Premier League Productions, Hargreaves slammed Leicester City players for not clearing their lines before Garnacho's strike, noting that nobody took responsibility for marking the Argentina international.
The retired England international highlighted how Leicester's defensive setup, including Ndidi, failed to prevent the Argentine winger from scoring.
"He's active. He tries to get on the ball here, tries a little trick but loses it. But when he finds a little pocket of space—look at Bruno—he checks his shoulder, he knows where he is," Hargreaves analyzed, emphasizing Fernandes' awareness.
Hargreaves turned his attention to Ndidi’s involvement in the goal, saying the Nigeria international could have reacted quicker.
"He just toepokes it straight to Alejandro Garnacho. Look at all the bodies they have back there, and Ndidi is probably right in front of him.
"All he's going to do is go straight into him. One thing I would say to Garnacho is, credit to him—he hit it early."
Ndidi picked up a booking in the 77th minute for a late tackle on Manchester United defender Matthijs de Ligt.
