Sparta Prague punish latecomer Olatunji with temporary exclusion from squad
Published: March 17, 2025
Sparta Prague suffered a 1-0 defeat against Slovan Liberec in the Chance League, failing to score in a league match for the first time since October 27.
One notable absence from the squad was Nigerian striker Victor Olatunji, whose exclusion was not due to injury but disciplinary reasons.
Head coach Lars Friis explained after the match that Olatunji had been left out because of lateness to training.
"Victor was late this week. We have to defend our environment, that's why I couldn't nominate him," Friis told Oneplay Sport.
The Danish coach emphasized that discipline and professionalism are key values at Sparta.
"One of the things we talk about is being the best at what doesn't require any talent. And being somewhere on time doesn't require any talent," he added.
Sparta had been on a strong run, winning nine consecutive matches, including a crucial derby victory.
However, Friis made it clear that maintaining the right atmosphere within the squad was more important than individual contributions.
"It sucks, he could have been useful for us today, but for me, the atmosphere in the club is the most important thing," he said.
With the defeat, Sparta risk falling to third place in the league standings.
The team will now have to regroup, with Olatunji expected to work his way back into contention by adhering to team standards.
His potential return to the squad remains uncertain, but Friis' decision sends a clear message that no player is above the club’s rules.
