Bassey joins Man Utd, Everton, Brighton defenders in BBC's PL Team of the Week
Published: March 17, 2025
Calvin Bassey has been recognized for his outstanding performance in the latest round of games played in the English top-flight, with former Watford striker Troy Deeney picking the Nigeria international in the BBC Premier League Team of the Week.
The Leicester City academy graduate helped Fulham keep a clean sheet in a London derby against Tottenham Hotspur at Craven Cottage on Sunday, going the distance in a 2-0 win.
Bassey registered five tackles, two clearances and won one aerial duel, while giving away one foul.
The Italian-born defender completed one dribble and 91.1 percent of his passes.
Deeney's Team of the Week is dominated by Manchester United, who have contributed three players in the shape of central defender Matthijs de Ligt, midfielder Bruno Fernandes and forward Alejandro Garnacho.
Bassey and Matthijs de Ligt are flanked by fullbacks Jake O'Brien (Everton) on the right and Pervis Estupinan (Brighton) on the left.
Joining Fernandes in a three-man midfield are Brentford's Christian Norgaard and Manchester City's Omar Marmoush, while Garnacho, Wolves' Jorgen Strand Larsen and Nottingham Forest's Anthony Elanga are the forwards.
Explaining his choice of Bassey, Deeney stated: "He doesn't get as much credit as Joachim Andersen next to him, but he was bullish, strong, solid in the tackle and epitomised that Fulham team."
This season, Bassey has started twenty seven games in the Premier League and has one goal to his name, a match-winning strike against Nottingham Forest back in February.
