Nigeria's opponents Zimbabwe forced to make change to squad as Victor Moses' teammate pulls out
Published: March 17, 2025
Zimbabwe has been forced to make a last-minute change to their squad ahead of their upcoming clash with Nigeria in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
The alteration comes after the national team’s captain, Marvelous Nakamba, was ruled out due to injury.
Nakamba, who plays alongside Nigeria's Victor Moses at Luton Town, had been a key player in Zimbabwe’s midfield but will now miss the qualifier.
Nakamba's absence has come as a significant blow to the Zimbabwean squad. As the captain, he has been a vital leader both on and off the field.
His presence in midfield had been crucial in linking up play and protecting the defense, and his experience was expected to play an essential role in the match against Nigeria.
However, the midfielder’s injury has left Zimbabwe scrambling to find a suitable replacement.
In response to Nakamba’s withdrawal, the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has called up local-based player Richard Hachiro to fill the gap.
Hachiro, a talented midfielder with strong defensive qualities, will now have the challenge of stepping into Nakamba’s shoes and helping to guide the team through this important World Cup qualifying match.
The change in the squad has added a level of uncertainty for Zimbabwe, but coach Michael Nees will be hoping that Hachiro can quickly adjust to the international stage and make a solid impact.
Despite being a more local-based option, Hachiro has shown promise in domestic competitions, and his inclusion could provide a fresh dynamic to Zimbabwe's midfield.
Nigeria, now coached by new manager Eric Chelle, who was appointed earlier this year, will look to capitalize on this disruption within the Zimbabwean ranks.
Chelle, tasked with guiding the Super Eagles through the World Cup qualifiers, will be aiming to make an immediate impact with his new squad.
