Published: March 18, 2025
Genk striker Tolu Arokodare has shared his excitement after receiving his first-ever call-up to the Super Eagles, describing it as a major achievement in his career.
In an interview with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) media team, the 24-year-old reflected on the moment he learned of his inclusion in the squad.
"First, I was surprised," Arokodare admitted. "I felt very honored to be mentioned amongst the, was it 30, 31? Yeah, I think 31 (39) players. It was quite surprising. I mean, I knew it was coming because I've been doing pretty well, and I was hoping it would come. And it did come, and I felt like a winner already."
The Genk forward revealed that even making the provisional squad felt like an accomplishment.
"Even if I didn't get to make the final 23, I feel like I've done something, I've achieved something," he said.
"And being in the final 23 also… yeah, I just feel really blessed, and I was very grateful."
Arokodare also spoke about the pride he feels in representing Nigeria, highlighting how playing for the national team had been a lifelong dream.
"It means a lot," he continued. "It's one of the best things that could happen to a football player—getting the opportunity to represent your country.
"As a kid, you always watched the national legends play, and you always wanted to play for your national team. Apparently, being in that position to play for my country means a lot to me."
The Super Eagles, now under the leadership of newly appointed head coach Eric Chelle, are set to face Rwanda on Friday as they continue their journey toward qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Arokodare’s strong performances for Genk this season have earned him a place in the squad, and he is in contention to make his international debut in the crucial encounter.
With Nigeria seeking a to revive their World Cup qualifying campaign, Arokodare could provide a fresh attacking option for the team.
His height, physicality, and ability to find the back of the net have made him a standout performer in Belgium, and he will be eager to make an impact if given the opportunity.
As the Super Eagles prepare for their upcoming fixture, Arokodare’s enthusiasm and determination will be a boost to the squad, as he looks to take his first steps on the international stage with Nigeria.
