Zimbabwe coach confident Warriors can turn the page ahead of WCQs against Benin, Nigeria
Published: March 18, 2025
Zimbabwe national team coach Michael Nees has expressed confidence in his team’s approach as they prepare to face Benin and Nigeria in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
The Warriors, currently bottom of Group C with two points, will take on Benin at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, South Africa, on Thursday before traveling to Uyo for a showdown with Nigeria next Tuesday.
Despite being seen as underdogs, the German tactician believes Zimbabwe can turn their fortunes around with the right mindset.
Speaking to herald.co.zw, Nees emphasized the importance of a positive mentality as the team seeks to secure crucial victories.
"We have to restart that World Cup qualification in a positive way," Nees said.
"We want to do that, to get the positive mood going, and to do everything in our power. Power to turn the table a little bit around, turn the page and to move up.
"That’s our approach. And now we have to look at what is the next task at hand. The next task at hand is a difficult game against Benin (on Thursday)."
While Nees has already built a strong reputation in Zimbabwe after leading the Warriors to the 2025 AFCON tournament, he faces a tough challenge against Eric Chelle’s Super Eagles, who are also desperate for a win to boost their qualification hopes.
Nigeria, currently fifth in Group C with three points—just one ahead of Zimbabwe—will first face group leaders Rwanda on Friday at the Amahoro Stadium before hosting the Warriors in Uyo.
With the pressure mounting on both sides, the upcoming fixtures will be crucial in shaping their World Cup qualification chances.
