'He is a fighter' - Former Arsenal midfielder tells Chelsea the pros and cons of signing Osimhen
Published: March 18, 2025
Chelsea continue to be linked with a move for Victor Osimhen, but former Arsenal and Chelsea midfielder Emmanuel Petit has expressed concerns over the striker’s personality and suitability for the club.
The Blues have been searching for a top-class No.9, with Osimhen frequently mentioned as a prime target.
The Nigerian has proven himself as a prolific goal-scorer in Serie A with Napoli and is currently on loan at Turkish side Galatasaray.
However, while his qualities on the pitch are clear, Petit has warned that his character could be a challenge for any potential suitor.
"My concerns with Victor Osimhen would be with his personality and character, it can be a great thing for the team if it fits in, but it can also be difficult in other teams," Petit stated as quoted by Goal.com.
Osimhen, 26, has drawn comparisons to former Chelsea striker Diego Costa due to his aggressive playing style and determination on the field. Petit acknowledged these traits, noting how they could work to Chelsea’s advantage.
"We all know his qualities and what he can bring to the team, he can score goals and bring character, he reminds me of Diego Costa in that sense, he is a fighter," he added.
However, despite Osimhen’s impressive goal-scoring record, Petit believes Chelsea should consider other options in the transfer market.
"In terms of personality and character, it can be a lot, but he is very versatile, but there might just be better options on the market this summer."
Chelsea’s need for a proven striker remains pressing, with Nicolas Jackson struggling with inconsistency in his first season at Stamford Bridge.
The club has also been linked with Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres and Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak as they look to strengthen their attack ahead of the next campaign.
With few elite strikers available, Chelsea must weigh up whether Osimhen’s qualities outweigh the concerns over his personality as they prepare for another crucial transfer window.
Meanwhile, Osimhen is currently at the Super Eagles camp in Kigali, as Nigeria prepares for Friday's crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Rwanda.
