'Never expected it' - Papa Daniel vows to show the world what he can do if he makes Nigeria debut
Published: March 18, 2025
Niger Tornadoes midfielder Papa Daniel has reacted with excitement following his inclusion in the Super Eagles squad, expressing both surprise and gratitude at the opportunity.
Speaking to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) media team, Daniel admitted, "I never expected it. I was just doing my thing, you know, and I don't even know.
"When I saw the provisional list, I was shocked. I was like, 'Oh, okay,' and when I saw the final list, I was like, 'Whoa!' I was very, very happy. Thanks to God because it's not easy for me to be here."
The call-up marks Daniel’s first time in the Super Eagles camp, and he acknowledged the presence of senior players as a major source of inspiration.
"Seeing the big boys in camp, and it being my first time in the Super Eagles, I am very, very happy. Seeing them around is a motivation for me to do more, to show them what I have, and to be humble," he said.
Daniel also praised the atmosphere within the squad, noting how welcoming the senior players have been to the home-based call-ups.
"They are all friendly. They encourage us, the home-based players. We never felt like we were not among them," he explained.
"I know we have everything—we have the qualities of players who can compete. I just pray for luck.
"That’s just it—luck. I would be very, very happy if I get the chance, and I will show Nigeria and the world who I am and what I can do."
The midfielder emphasized his admiration for talented players, stating that he always looks for opportunities to learn and improve.
"I love good footballers. When I see you play, I know I can learn something from you. I admire them and pick things up. I know I need to learn and just do my best," he concluded.
Daniel will be hoping to make his debut on Friday when the Super Eagles face Rwanda in Kigali in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
