'We need to be at the World Cup' - Boniface says Super Eagles are ready to give their best v Rwanda
Published: March 20, 2025
Ahead of Nigeria's crucial 2026 World Cup qualifier against Rwanda on Friday, Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface expressed confidence and determination in turning the team's fortunes around after a less-than-ideal start to the qualifying campaign.
Despite the challenges faced in the first four games, Boniface emphasized the importance of the upcoming match for both the players and the country.
"We know how important this game is to us and also as a country,” Boniface told Nigerian reporters in Kigali.
"We need to be at the World Cup, and I can speak for myself and the other players—we’re ready to give our best and hopefully secure a win.”
The Super Eagles' recent performance has been under scrutiny, but Boniface made it clear that the team remains focused and locked in for the challenge ahead.
"You can see it in the training, everyone is ready and really looking forward to the game," he added.
"We hope and see if we can achieve our aim so hopefully we can get a win."
The match will be Nigeria's first under new head coach Eric Shell, and Boniface spoke candidly about the early days of training under the new leadership.
"It’s been really tough,” he admitted. "But no matter who the coach is, we know how big Nigeria is as a country.
"We always want to give our 100%, and that doesn’t change. The most important thing is that we’re all ready, and we’re all looking forward to the game."
As the Super Eagles prepare for the crucial clash with Rwanda, Boniface and his teammates are determined to get back on track and secure the vital three points needed to improve their World Cup qualification chances.
