After compassionate leave, Rwanda defenders return to training ahead of WCQ against Super Eagles
Published: March 20, 2025
Rwandan defenders Fitina Omborenga and his brother Yunusu Nshimiyimana have resumed training with the national team after taking time off to mourn the passing of their father.
The duo, who were given a brief leave by head coach Adel Amrouche, returned to full training ahead of Rwanda's crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Nigeria and Lesotho.
According to radioTV10, the brothers buried their father on Tuesday, March 18, and rejoined the Amavubi squad immediately to continue preparations for Friday's clash against the Super Eagles at the Amahoro Stadium.
Rwanda, who currently top Group C with seven points, will be looking to extend their impressive run against Nigeria.
The Amavubi remain unbeaten in their last two encounters with the Super Eagles, securing a 1-1 draw in Kigali and a historic 2-1 victory in Uyo during the 2025 AFCON qualifiers.
Nigeria, on the other hand, are under pressure to secure a win after a disappointing start to their qualification campaign.
The Super Eagles sit fifth in the group with just three points, four behind Rwanda, and need victories in their next two matches against Rwanda and Zimbabwe to stay in contention for a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
Friday's encounter will also mark the managerial debut of Eric Chelle as Nigeria's head coach.
The Malian tactician will be aiming for a strong start by securing Nigeria's first win over Rwanda in three meetings.
Meanwhile, Adel Amrouche, who will be in charge of his first competitive game for Rwanda, will look to maintain his team's momentum and keep their World Cup qualification hopes alive
