Amrouche admits Osimhen's early goal forced Rwanda to abandon their plan in loss to Nigeria
Published: March 22, 2025
Rwanda head coach Adel Amrouche has reacted to his side's 2-0 defeat to Nigeria in Friday’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier at the Amahoro Stadium in Kigali.
Despite Rwanda’s strong performance against Nigeria in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers, where they secured a draw and a victory, the Amavubi fell short against the Super Eagles on Friday evening.
The loss not only narrowed the gap between both teams to one point but also saw Rwanda relinquish the top spot in the group to South Africa.
"We started with a plan. I know Nigeria is coming quick with that pressure to score because they have the pressure," the Algerian tactician stated.
"And we tried something in the beginning, maybe you saw some positioning for the players, maybe it was working.
"When we conceded the goal, we changed the plan. They forced me to change because in the beginning I say (to the players) give me twenty minutes without conceding and we agree today would be our day."
However, Nigeria took the lead early, with Victor Osimhen capitalizing on Ademola Lookman’s cross in the 11th minute.
The Galatasaray striker then doubled Nigeria’s advantage before halftime with a well-executed lob.
Amoruche lamented the manner in which his team conceded both goals, blaming defensive lapses rather than tactical errors.
"Sometimes you plan but you know football. I don't want to talk about my players but you know when you concede the goals from free kick and pass from the opponent - it is not about tactics. It is a shame."
With the victory, Nigeria has reignited its chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to be hosted in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle will now shift focus to the crucial encounter against Zimbabwe in Uyo.
Currently, Nigeria sits fourth in the group with six points, still trailing leaders South Africa by four points after their victory over Lesotho.
Chelle will be aiming for a win against Zimbabwe to close the gap and strengthen Nigeria’s push for World Cup qualification.
