'Naija sabi do things with style' – Oliseh hails 1980 Super Eagles for inspiring his love for Nigeria
Published: March 24, 2025
Former Super Eagles captain Sunday Oliseh has paid tribute to Nigeria’s 1980 Africa Cup of Nations -winning team, acknowledging their influence on his passion for the national team and their iconic green and white colors.
Oliseh's comments came in response to a post by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) marking the 45th anniversary of the country’s first AFCON triumph.
The NFF’s message celebrated Nigeria's three continental victories in 1980, 1994, and 2013, while also honoring the players who helped shape the nation's footballing legacy.
Reflecting on the significance of the 1980 squad, Olise wrote on X (formerly Twitter):
"This team was hugely responsible for my love of the Super Eagles green white green colours; Odegbami, Chukwu, Okala, Atuegbu, Muda Lawal, Nwosu, Owo Blow... They all had technical prowess, strength, and style. Naija sabi do things with style sha!!"
The 1980 Super Eagles, then known as the Green Eagles, made history by securing Nigeria’s maiden AFCON title on home soil.
Led by Christian Chukwu and inspired by the brilliance of Segun Odegbami, the team dominated Algeria 3-0 in the final at the National Stadium in Lagos, with Odegbami scoring twice and Muda Lawal adding another.
Oliseh, who later became a key figure in Nigeria’s second AFCON victory in 1994, has often spoken about the impact of past generations on his career.
His latest remarks highlight how the achievements of Chukwu, Odegbami, and their teammates influenced future stars and strengthened the nation’s footballing identity.
As Nigeria continues to chase a fourth AFCON title, the 1980 triumph remains a landmark moment in the country’s sporting history, inspiring players and fans alike.
