'We can't afford to drop points' - Troost-Ekong warns Super Eagles teammates pre-Zimbabwe
Published: March 24, 2025
Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has cautioned his teammates against complacency ahead of their crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Zimbabwe in Uyo on Tuesday evening.
Troost-Ekong played the entire duration of Nigeria's last game, where the team secured a 2-0 victory over Rwanda in Kigali. The victory marked Nigeria’s first win in the World Cup qualification campaign, elevating their tally to six points from five games. However, they remain fourth on the log with five more games left to play.
With the stakes high, the Super Eagles are determined to claim all three points against Zimbabwe to strengthen their chances of qualifying for the tournament.
In a statement by the NFF, Troost-Ekong emphasized the significance of the match, warning his teammates against underestimating the Warriors.
"We are looking forward to a win. The three points are important to us. At this stage, we cannot afford to drop any more points," Troost-Ekong stated.
"Our aim is to take it one match at a time, collect three points here and there and hope fervently that these will be enough to get us the ticket."
Nigeria’s head coach, Eric Chelle, will be hoping to secure another victory and keep the team's qualification hopes alive.
A win against Zimbabwe would be a significant boost for the Super Eagles as they continue their quest for a place in the 2026 Fifa World Cup.
