Former Arsenal star criticises Awoniyi for missed chance in Nottingham Forest’s win over Brighton
Published: March 29, 2025
Former Arsenal star Matthew Upson has criticized Taiwo Awoniyi for missing a crucial opportunity during Nottingham Forest’s FA Cup quarterfinal victory over Brighton on Saturday evening.
Awoniyi, who has struggled for playing time this season, was handed a rare start due to the absence of Chris Wood through injury.
However, the Nigerian forward failed to capitalize on the opportunity and was substituted in the second half, with Anthony Elanga taking his place.
Despite the game ending goalless after regular time, Nottingham Forest secured a spot in the semifinals by defeating Brighton 4-3 on penalties.
Awoniyi had a golden chance to put Forest ahead in the first half when he received a well-placed pass from Ola Aina.
However, the striker took an early shot, which was saved by Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen.
Speaking on BBC One, Upson criticized Awoniyi’s decision-making in front of goal, stating that the Nigerian failed to recognize the time and space he had before taking his shot.
"Taiwo Awoniyi doesn't realise how much time he had" Upson said. "Jan Paul van Hecke couldn't challenge for the ball, but it was a good strong right foot from Bart Verbruggen."
Awoniyi has endured a difficult campaign, scoring just two goals in 27 matches across all competitions.
His struggles contributed to his omission from Nigeria’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe.
With Chris Wood still sidelined, Awoniyi will be hoping to get more opportunities and prove himself when the Premier League resumes.
