Osimhen not rude, just passionate - 1960 Olympian stands by Galatasaray striker after fan gesture
Published: March 31, 2025
Victor Osimhen has found himself at the center of discussion in Turkish football following Galatasaray’s recent struggles.
The Nigerian striker, who has been a key figure for the club, was involved in a tense moment with Beşiktaş fans after a recent derby, allegedly making an offensive gesture toward them.
However, Telegol commentator Selim Soydan, who participated in the 1960 Olympic Games, has defended Osimhen, dismissing claims that the forward displayed any disrespect.
In quotes relayed by habersarikirmizi.com, Soydan described Osimhen as an ambitious and determined player, emphasizing that heated exchanges with rival fans are a normal part of football.
He insisted that Osimhen’s actions were not rude but rather a reflection of his passion for the game.
The incident has sparked debates among Turkish football fans, but Soydan’s comments suggest that Osimhen remains fully committed to Galatasaray’s success.
Beyond Osimhen’s behavior, Soydan also touched on Galatasaray’s squad-building strategy, questioning whether the club had made the right moves in the transfer market.
He pointed out that Galatasaray had secured multiple reinforcements in the mid-season window, yet their recent performances have raised concerns.
Despite these additions, the team has suffered its first league defeat, leading to criticism of manager Okan Buruk and the club’s leadership.
Soydan also made a striking claim about Osimhen’s potential transfer history, suggesting that if Fenerbahçe president Ali Koç had pursued the Nigerian earlier, he could have secured his signature.
He argued that Koç, with his financial resources, could have outbid Galatasaray or even Napoli to bring Osimhen to Fenerbahçe.
However, according to Soydan, the previous leadership of the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) prevented such possibilities, and Koç had other priorities at the time.
Osimhen’s performances remain crucial for Galatasaray as they look to recover from their recent dip in form.
The Super League title race is still open, but the club will need their star striker at his best to maintain their challenge.
With growing pressure on Buruk and the squad, all eyes will be on Osimhen to deliver in the coming matches and prove his worth amid the ongoing debates surrounding his presence in Turkish football.
