'They lied' - Porto's Super Eagles LB Zaidu confirms he's not in contact with Leeds United
Published: April 01, 2025
Nigeria international Zaidu Sanusi has moved quickly to dismiss reports linking him with a summer transfer to Championship promotion hopefuls Leeds United.
From the word go, the news of Leeds United's interest in the Super Eagles left-back did not add up, considering that a €50 million release clause was inserted into his contract after he signed a new deal with Porto in October 2022.
As per the report, it was claimed that Leeds United were preparing a bid of two million euros for Zaidu - an amount that would be considered disrespectful to Porto, given their reputation for selling players at a premium.
To put that into perspective, Super Eagles central defender Chidozie Awaziem, who was only a fringe player at Porto, left for Boavista in the summer of 2021 for a fee of €5 million.
Zaidu is determined to regain his place in Porto's starting lineup after recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament injury that he suffered shortly after returning to the club following his participation in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Nigeria's first choice left-back when in tiptop condition was not included in the squad for the March internationals against Rwanda and Zimbabwe due to his limited game time at Porto.
When asked to confirm reports suggesting he was in contact with Leeds United, Zaidu told allnigeriasoccer.com: "I am not in contact with Leeds United or any team right now.
"I am not negotiating with Leeds United and I have not been offered a four-year contract. They lied about it."
Signed from Santa Clara in August 2020, Zaidu has a contract with Porto until June 30, 2027.
