Chelsea-owned midfielder wanted by Eric Chelle opens Bundesliga account for Borussia Dortmund
Published: April 05, 2025
Carney Chukwuemeka opened his Bundesliga account for Borussia Dortmund, scoring in their convincing 4-1 away win over SC Freiburg at the Europa-Park Stadion on Saturday afternoon.
The 21-year-old midfielder, on loan from Chelsea, was handed his first start by Niko Kovač and made a strong impression, finding the net in the 51st minute.
His shot, aided by a deflection, flew past the Freiburg goalkeeper, Florian Müller to double Dortmund's lead after Karim Adeyemi had broken the deadlock in the first half.
Chukwuemeka, who joined Dortmund during the winter transfer window in search of regular playing time, played a key role throughout the encounter.
He was instrumental in the third goal when he dazzled past defenders with some brilliant footwork and delivered a slick pass to Julian Brandt, who squared it for Serhou Guirassy to finish it.
The Austria-born midfielder of Nigerian descent is on the radar of Nigerian coach Eric Chelle, who is reportedly seeking to bolster the Super Eagles squad after the 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe.
Chelle has visited London to explore possible national team switch options, with Chukwuemeka believed to be a priority target.
Chukwuemeka, an England youth international, remains eligible to represent Nigeria at senior level and has yet to make a competitive appearance for the Three Lions.
His recent resurgence in Germany could serve as a timely opportunity for Nigeria to secure his services before the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The midfielder had endured a frustrating first half of the season at Chelsea under new manager Enzo Maresca, prompting the move to Dortmund in January.
Since arriving in the Bundesliga, Chukwuemeka has gradually adapted to life in Germany and is beginning to show the form that once made him one of the most promising midfielders in England.
