After pocketing Liverpool's Salah, Fulham coach says Bassey has all the skills to be a top CB
Published: April 06, 2025
Fulham manager Marco Silva has praised Calvin Bassey for his performance against Liverpool, where the defender effectively kept Mohamed Salah in check.
Silva highlighted Bassey’s potential to become one of the Premier League's top central defenders after his impressive display in Fulham 3-2 victory over Liverpool on Sunday, at Craven Cottage.
Salah, the Premier League leading scorer with 27 goals, failed to register a single shot on target against the Cottagers.
Bassey, back in the Fulham squad after he was an unused substitute against Arsenal, made three tackles, one interception and five clearances, while blocking one shot.
In an interview with BBC Match of the Day, Silva shared his high regard for the 25-year-old.
"Calvin has all the skills to be a top central defender. He ticks all the boxes to be a top, top player. Now he has to be more consistent," Silva stated.
Bassey, who joined Fulham from Ajax in 2023, has already showcased his physicality, composure, and tactical understanding.
His ability to deal with Salah, one of the league’s most dangerous forwards, emphasized his defensive qualities and promise at the highest level.
While Silva acknowledged Bassey’s raw talent, he also stressed the importance of consistency.
For the Super Eagles defender to reach his full potential, he must deliver solid performances week in and week out in the demanding Premier League environment.
As Fulham look ahead to their upcoming matches, Silva will hope that Bassey can continue to build on his impressive performance against Liverpool.
