Lookman annoyed over substitution against Lazio as Atalanta coach confirms there was a mistake
Published: April 06, 2025
Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini has acknowledged a substitution mistake during his side's 1-0 loss to Lazio in a Serie A match held at the Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo on Sunday.
Fisayo Dele-Bashiru came close to breaking the deadlock two minutes into the second half, forcing Atalanta goalkeeper
Marco Carnesecchi to make a save with an effort from distance.
Lazio glovesman Christos Mandas also had a save in the 50th minute, denying Mateo Retegui from close range, with Ademola Lookman involved in the buildup.
A defensive lapse by the Nerazzurri allowed Gustav Isaksen to score, after Dele-Bashiru's header set him up in the 54th minute.
Despite Atalanta pressing for an equalizer, Gasperini caught everyone off guard by substituting Lookman and Retegui, bringing on Daniel Maldini and Lazar Samardzic in the 74th minute.
The first player substituted was Lookman, who walked off the field and sat on the bench clearly irritated and frustrated by Gasperini's decision to substitute him.
The substitution was a mistake due to a misunderstanding, as it was Ederson, not Lookman, who was supposed to leave the pitch, with the team manager confirming that 'Ede' (Ederson) was the intended player to be substituted, not 'Ade' (Lookman).
Speaking post-match, Gian Piero Gasperini clarified that he meant to take off Ederson instead of Lookman.
"Yes, there was a mistake. I said Ede, they understood Ade," he told DAZN, according to Calciomercato.
For the third time this season, Lookman was unable to find the net in three consecutive Serie A matches, after firing blanks against Lazio.
