Chelsea-owned player on Eric Chelle's radar earns Bundesliga Team of the Week spot
Published: April 07, 2025
Chelsea loanee Carney Chukwuemeka has been named in the German Bundesliga Team of the Week by Whoscored.
The football statistics website has selected the top performing players for matchday 28, with the England youth international of Nigerian descent making the cut.
Chukwuemeka is one of several dual-national players with Chelsea ties being tracked by Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle ahead of this summer's international friendlies, alongside Tosin Adarabioyo and Faustino Anjorin.
Against SC Freiburg, the Aston Villa academy graduate netted his first goal in Borussia Dortmund colours, helping them secure a 4-1 road win.
Lining up between the two strikers Karim Adeyemi and Maximilian Beier, and operating from the left, the tri-national midfielder, who was born in Austria, gave a good account of himself on his full debut in the Bundesliga.
Five minutes into the second half, Chukwuemeka ran at the Freiburg defence and fired a shot from around 20 meters out, which took a deflection off Lienhart, leaving Muller in goal with no chance.
He was involved in the buildup to Borussia Dortmund's third goal scored by Serhou Guirassy, doing brilliantly to get the better of three Freiburg players before passing to Julian Brandt, who spotted the run of the Guinean marksman.
Chukwuemeka contested more challenges than any other player (27) during his 68 minutes on the pitch in the victory over Freiburg.
The 21-year-old won an impressive 59% of those challenges and completed a remarkable 95% of his passes to teammates.
