Centre-forward, support striker or midfielder: Ex-Nigeria U20 coach reveals Iheanacho's best position

Former Nigeria U20 head coach, Manu Garba, has offered valuable insight into Kelechi Iheanacho's most effective position on the pitch, following the Nigerian forward's impressive return to form for Middlesbrough in the English Championship.
Iheanacho, who joined Boro on loan from La Liga side Sevilla during the January transfer window, initially endured a slow start to life at the Riverside Stadium.
However, the Super Eagles forward has hit a purple patch since the March international break, registering one goal and two assists in his last three league appearances as Boro push for a spot in the Championship playoffs.
Despite his growing influence on the team, questions remain over Iheanacho's ideal position, with Middlesbrough manager Michael Carrick deploying him in various attacking roles.
Since the start of the 2024-2025 season, Iheanacho has been utilized as a central striker, a second striker, winger and occasionally as an attacking midfielder.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with allnigeriasoccer.com, Garba, who famously coached Iheanacho to global stardom during Nigeria's triumphant run at the 2013 FIFA U17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates, believes the 27-year-old is most productive when playing just behind the main striker.
"He later played behind the main striker, as a supporting striker because his final balls are very good," Garba said.
"He creates chances for the strikers and he can also finish well when he gets the chances too. Most of the goals he scored are from that position."
Iheanacho starred at the U17 World Cup, scoring six goals and earning the tournament's Golden Ball as Nigeria clinched their fourth title.
His performances attracted interest from several European giants before he eventually signed with Manchester City.
As the Championship season enters its decisive phase, all eyes will be on how Carrick continues to utilize Iheanacho—and whether the Nigerian can maintain his momentum in front of goal.
