Unity Cup: Akor Adams unlikely to make Super Eagles debut next month after Sevilla coach reveal
Published: April 11, 2025
Sevilla striker Akor Adams is unlikely to make his Super Eagles debut during the Unity tournament following a revelation by Garcia Pimienta, the Sevilla manager over the extent of his injury.
Adams, who joined Sevilla in the winter transfer from Montpellier, suffered the injury this week which is likely to keep him out of the four-nation tournament in London next month.
The Super Eagles are expected to participate in the tournament alongside Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, and Jamaica to prepare for the resumption of the World Cup qualifiers in September
Speaking during his pre-match conference ahead of the clash against Valencia, Sevilla Coach Garcia Pimienta confirmed the injury and revealed the Nigeria striker could miss the rest of the season.
"Unfortunately, we had the double blow of the injuries to Akor and Vargas, as well as Tanguy's long-term injury, but they want to turn the situation around," he stated.
"I feel really bad for Akor and Rubén. It looks like they’ll be out for several weeks, and we’ll see whether they make it back in time for the end of the season, it all depends on how they progress."
Pimienta expressed satisfaction with the performance of Akor Adams but expressed concern with the latest injury setback.
"The worst thing that can happen to a player is getting injured because they can’t help the team.
"Rubén was playing an important role, getting minutes and making a difference. Akor brought something different in his first match as a starter and had already been out for several weeks."
The situation is a huge blow for Akor Adams after making the 39-man provisional list ahead of the clash against Rwanda in Kigali and Rwanda in Uyo.
Despite missing the final list, Akor Adams was expected to be in contention to make his debut during the Unity Cup.
With the latest injury, his chances of making his debut for Nigeria during the tournament is now a major doubt.
