Southampton winger snubs Liverpool and Man City legends, chooses Okocha as PL's African idol
Published: April 12, 2025
Southampton winger Kamaldeen Sulemana has chosen Nigerian football legend Jay-Jay Okocha as his African idol in the Premier League, despite the presence of several notable African players who have made their mark in England’s top flight.
In an interview with Showmax, Sulemana was asked about the players who have influenced his career.
While he acknowledged the significant achievements of Liverpool icons Sadio Mané and Mohamed Salah, Manchester City legend Yaya Touré and former Chelsea and Everton striker Samuel Eto’o, it was Okocha who stood out as his personal hero.
"In the Premier League, position-wise, I would have to say Jay-Jay Okocha," Sulemana said, emphasizing Okocha’s technical skills and creativity that shaped his own approach to the game.
"Obviously Ronaldinho is my idol, and we are similar in how we play, and we’re fun for people to watch, and he is the player I looked up to."
Although the likes of Mané, Salah, Touré, and Eto’o have enjoyed stellar Premier League careers, Sulemana explained that Okocha's unique style of play, characterized by flair, vision, and skill, had the most impact on him.
"But there are so many in the Premier League that have done incredibly well," Sulemana continued.
"The likes of Sadio Mané, who has been at Southampton, Mohamed Salah, Yaya Touré, Samuel Eto’o – there are so many names, but Jay-Jay Okocha is my go-to."
Okocha, who is widely regarded as one of the most skillful and entertaining players to ever grace the Premier League, notably impressed during his time at Bolton Wanderers.
His dazzling dribbling, creativity, and playmaking ability left a lasting legacy, making him a source of inspiration for many aspiring African footballers.
Sulemana, who is known for his flair and exciting style of play, looks up to Okocha’s ability to entertain and captivate audiences, something that resonates deeply with his own playing style.
As the young winger continues to make his mark in the Premier League, Okocha's influence will undoubtedly continue to shape his journey.
