Werder Bremen in advanced talks to sign Hamburg's German-Nigerian right-back
Published: April 14, 2025
Werder Bremen are reportedly in advanced talks to sign Hamburg's Nigeria-eligible teenage right-back Joshua Joel.
German newspaper Bild says Hamburg's next promising talent Joel is about to leave for Werder Bremen.
At 16, the dual-national defender has been offered a four-year contract by Werder Bremen, and if all goes well, he will begin his professional career with the River Islanders.
Werder Bremen signed Germany youth international Karim Coulibaly from Hamburg last summer and are now heavily courting another player from their youth team.
Since joining Hamburg in 2021, Joel has featured twice for the Rothosen DFB U17 Youth League
However, he has not received a call-up to Hamburg U17s since November 2024 amid speculation surrounding his future.
Since he has not featured for Germany at any youth level, the promising defender is eligible to play for Nigeria's youth teams immediately as no paperwork is required for a change of association.
Meanwhile, Werder Bremen forward Justin Njinmah who is rumored to be on the radar of the Nigeria Football Federation is being linked with a departure from the club at the end of the season, with Serie A side AS Roma among the clubs interested.
In an interview with Transfermarkt, he confirmed that moving abroad is an option this summer.
