'We're a Nigerian family' - Chelsea CB Tosin proud of his roots, on NFF and Eric Chelle's radar
Published: April 15, 2025
Chelsea centre-back Tosin Adarabioyo has opened up about his Nigerian heritage as talks intensify over a potential international allegiance switch to Nigeria from England.
The 27-year-old, who joined Chelsea last summer from Fulham on a free transfer, has become a key figure in Enzo Maresca’s side after a slow start.
Known for his composure, aerial dominance, and attacking contributions, Tosin has recorded four goals and one assist in 31 appearances across all competitions this season.
His standout performances have not gone unnoticed. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle have been monitoring the defender ahead of the upcoming Unity Cup and the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
During a recent interview with Chelsea's official website, Tosin expressed pride in his Nigerian heritage and upbringing.
"We’re very much a Nigerian family and it was a Nigerian upbringing, whether that’s the food or traditionally the way we’ve been brought up, which is a bit different to how it would be here," Tosin shared.
"The food is harder, stuff like pounded yam, stuff that makes you strong!’"
He also credited his elder brothers, Gbolahan and Fisayo, for playing a crucial role in his development.
Fisayo, like Tosin, is a product of the Manchester City academy and was called up to a Nigeria U23 training camp in Abuja ahead of the 2016 Olympic Games.
"Because of that, they always pushed me on, and they still do,'’ he said."
Coach Eric Chelle, who visited London earlier this year. reportedly ranks Tosin among the top three defensive reinforcements needed to boost the Super Eagles squad.
His inclusion would add depth and competition to the Nigerian backline, which is gearing up for a busy international schedule.
