Carney Chukwuemeka: Super Eagles coach won't watch Chelsea loanee face Barcelona tonight
Published: April 15, 2025
Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle will not be able to assess Carney Chukwuemeka in action on Tuesday night, as the Borussia Dortmund midfielder is ruled out of the UEFA Champions League second-leg tie against Barcelona due to injury, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.
The Chelsea loanee, who joined Dortmund on loan in January, has been steadily making a name for himself in Germany.
Since arriving at Signal Iduna Park, Chukwuemeka has made nine appearances and scored once, showcasing glimpses of his creativity, composure, and technical quality in the number 10 role.
The 21-year-old midfielder of Nigerian descent will miss the crucial European fixture, which is a major setback for Dortmund manager Niko Kovac, who is tasked with overturning a daunting 4-0 deficit from the first leg at the Montjuïc Stadium.
Chukwuemeka’s absence is also a blow for Nigeria’s head coach Eric Chelle, who has been monitoring the youngster as part of a broader scouting mission to strengthen the Super Eagles squad.
Chelle, who visited London earlier this year, is hoping to convince the England youth international to switch allegiance to Nigeria.
Although Chukwuemeka has represented England at various youth levels, he remains eligible to play for Nigeria at the senior level, as he has not yet earned a cap for the Three Lions.
Ahead of the Unity Cup scheduled for June in London and the continuation of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Chelle is keen on integrating more young, dynamic talents into the Nigerian setup.
Chukwuemeka is seen as a potential game-changer whose inclusion could deepen the midfield options and spark increased competition within the squad.
