EFL Awards 2025: Ibadan-born CB Olowu who has pledged future to Nigeria over England shortlisted
Published: April 16, 2025
Arsenal-reared central defender Joseph Olowu is the only player of Nigerian descent shortlisted for an award at the EFL Awards 2025.
Born in Ibadan, the Doncaster Rovers star has committed his international future to Nigeria even though he's eligible to represent England.
Olowu visited Poland during the 2019 Fifa U20 World Cup to hold discussions with Nigeria Football Federation officials, where he expressed his desire to represent the three-time African champions.
The 25-year-old has been shortlisted for the EFL player in the community award alongside Jack Stacey (Norwich City) and Taylor Moore (Bristol Rovers).
Olowu was named the League Two winner of Player in the Community award earlier the month, an award sponsored by Professional Footballers' Association (PFA).
According to the EFL, the Nigerian has been nominated thanks to his honourable work in local schools, supporting a series of campaigns touching on topics including anti-bullying and anti-racism.
The defender even took it upon himself to learn sign language along the way to interact with students during his visit to Doncaster Deaf School.
Joseph's generosity extends beyond his voluntary work, as he also consistently supported the Football Welcomes initiative — a group aiding refugees and asylum seekers — by organizing collections among Doncaster Rovers players and personally purchasing items.
This season, the Hale End Academy graduate has appeared in 39 matches across all competitions, registering three goals and two assists.
The winners will be announced live at the League's annual ceremony in London on Sunday, 27 April.
