UEL: Super Eagles defender Balogun trains with Rangers ahead of trip to Bilbao
Published: April 16, 2025
Leon Balogun is seemingly in contention to be included in Rangers travelling squad for the Europa League clash with Athletic Bilbao at San Mamés Barria on Thursday night, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.
There had been speculation about the fitness of the experienced central defender following his omission from Rangers' matchday squad against Aberdeen last weekend.
Before the squad left for Spain, Balogun was spotted training with his Rangers teammates, including Cyriel Dessers, at the Rangers Training Centre in Glasgow.
The 36-year-old was one of the standout performers as ten-man Rangers and Athletic Bilbao played out a hard-fought goalless draw at Ibrox despite the dismissal of Robin Pröpper in the thirteenth minute.
Balogun and his teammates still have a fighting chance of progressing to the semifinals.
They may take inspiration from the fact that they have already gone away and beaten Malmö, Nice and Fenerbahce in this season's Europa League ahead of their tough trip to Bilbao.
Balogun was a key member of the Rangers side that reached the final of the 2022 Europa League, but was an unused substitute in the showpiece against Eintracht Frankfurt.
This season, the former Brighton & Hove and Werder Bremen man has played in six Europa League matches, including starts at Ülker Stadyumu FB Şükrü Saraçoğlu Spor Kompleksi and Old Trafford.
