'Didn't look right'- Dortmund coach explains why Chelsea loanee Chukwuemeka was missing v Barcelona
Published: April 16, 2025
Borussia Dortmund manager Nico Kovac has shed light on Carney Chukwuemeka's unexpected absence during his side's 3-1 Champions League quarterfinal victory over Barcelona on Tuesday night.
Chukwuemeka, who joined Dortmund on loan from Chelsea during the winter transfer window, was a surprise omission from the matchday squad, sparking concern among fans who have been impressed with the youngster's resurgence in Germany.
Addressing the media after the match, Kovac confirmed the midfielder was ruled out due to a minor injury concern and emphasized the club's desire to protect the player's long-term fitness.
While the Dortmund boss did not disclose the exact nature of the injury, he hinted that the 21-year-old could be back in action soon, possibly within the next couple of weeks.
"Carney tried, but his running didn't look right," Kovac said at the post-match press conference, according to BVBWLD.
"We didn't want to take any risks because we want to have everyone on board in the coming weeks."
Since his arrival in January, Chukwuemeka has featured in nine matches across all competitions for Dortmund, scoring once and quickly becoming a fan favorite due to his energetic performances and technical flair.
His impressive displays have not only reignited his club career but also caught the attention of international selectors.
Super Eagles manager Eric Chelle is reportedly monitoring Chukwuemeka closely, hoping to persuade the England youth international to switch allegiance to Nigeria ahead of the Unity Cup tournament scheduled for June in London.
