PL: Goal and assist from Newcastle United forward tracked by Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle
Published: April 16, 2025
Newcastle United forward Jacob Murphy delivered another standout performance on Wednesday night, scoring and assisting in the Magpies' dominant 5-0 win over Crystal Palace in a Premier League clash at St James' Park.
Murphy who is reportedly on the radar of Super Eagles manager Eric Chelle, opened the scoring in the 14th minute, calmly slotting home after being played through on goal.
He later turned provider, whipping in a pinpoint cross that Fabian Schär powered into the net for Newcastle’s fourth goal.
The Magpies' other scorers were Harvey Barnes and Alexander Isak, while Marc Guéhi doubled the home team's lead in the 38th minute, putting the ball into his own net.
With eight goals and eleven assists in 29 Premier League appearances this season, Murphy has been in sparkling form, helping propel Newcastle into the race for a UEFA Champions League spot.
His consistent displays have drawn the attention of Chelle, who is looking to bolster Nigeria’s attacking options as the team pushes to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
The Malian coach visited London in February and is said to be exploring the possibility of convincing Murphy to commit to Nigeria’s national team setup.
A late bloomer, Murphy has been provisionally cap-tied to his country of birth, England, since 2013 and is also eligible to represent the Republic of Ireland at international level.
