'Constantly running' - Rangers star Dessers called 'a dangerous player' by Athletic Bilbao manager
Published: April 17, 2025
Athletic Bilbao manager Ernesto Valverde has identified Nigerian striker Cyriel Dessers as a key threat ahead of Thursday night’s UEFA Europa League quarter-final second-leg clash against Rangers at San Mamés.
The experienced Spanish tactician, speaking during his pre-match press conference, singled out Dessers’ positioning and movement as a pivotal factor in Rangers’ strong European run this season.
Speaking to the media, as reported by The Scottish Sun, the former Barcelona coach described Dessers as one of Rangers' most dangerous players, citing his tactical intelligence and ability to exploit defensive gaps.
"Rangers have a good formation, players who play well in the space," Valverde said.
"Dessers is constantly running to the space, being a reference player, a beacon for his team. He’s a dangerous player."
Dessers endured a challenging start to the campaign but has found scintillating form in recent months, notching 23 goals and seven assists in 49 appearances across all competitions.
His goal-scoring exploits have been crucial in propelling the Scottish giants deep into the Europa League.
In addition to the Nigerian international, the former Barcelona midfielder also highlighted James Tavernier and Václav Černý, commending the Czech winger for his sharp decision-making on the pitch.
"Their players from the outside are very well positioned, whether they're playing James Tavernier in defence or in the midfield,” he noted.
"Then they have Cerny, who's a bullet. He’s very precise when it comes to defining moments. He's a player that in the space can hurt you.”
Rangers head into the second leg with hopes of reaching the semi-finals, and Dessers will once again be relied upon to lead the charge against a Bilbao at San Mamés.
