Every word Espanyol v Getafe referee said about Uche after red card for harsh tackle on Jofre
Published: April 19, 2025
Referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea shared insight on the reaction of Super Eagles midfielder Christantus Uche following his red card in Getafe's 1-0 loss against Espanyol on Friday night.
Uche was shown a straight red card in the 60th minute for a dangerous tackle on Espanyol's Jofre.
The referee initially issued a yellow card but upgraded it to red after a VAR review led by Jorge Figueroa Vázquez.
The decision infuriated the Nigerian midfielder, who challenged the referee's call before being restrained and escorted off the pitch by his teammates and team officials.
According to Spanish sports daily Mundo Deportivo, Basque referee Ricardo de Burgos detailed the incident in his official report, accusing Uche of using excessive force in his attempt to win the ball from Jofre.
"In the 60th minute, the player (6) Uche, Christantus Ugonna was sent off for the following reason: For entering with his foot in a plank shape, hitting the tibia of an opponent, using excessive force in the fight for the ball. The player who suffered the entry did not require medical assistance," the Basque referee wrote in his report.
However, it wasn't just the tackle that drew attention. Uche's reaction after being shown the red card could see him land in even deeper trouble.
According to De Burgos, the Nigerian midfielder had to be physically restrained and escorted off the pitch by his teammates and members of the coaching staff.
"Once he was sent off, he had to be restrained and subsequently removed from the field of play by several players and coaching staff from his team as he was approaching me, angrily protesting my decision," the referee added.
Uche's conduct may now be reviewed by the Spanish Football Federation's disciplinary committee, potentially resulting in an extended ban.
The 21-year-old has been a key player for Getafe, scoring three goals and providing five assists in 30 league appearances.
His absence would be a significant blow for the club as they battle for a European spot.
