'I'm joining the petition' - Newcastle star wants to see Murphy in England squad amid Nigeria interest
Published: April 19, 2025
Newcastle United forward Harvey Barnes has backed calls for tri-national player Jacob Murphy to be named in the next England squad for the internationals in June against Andorra and Senegal.
Born in Wembley, Murphy qualifies to represent England and the Republic of Ireland, and is eligible to suit up for the Super Eagles through his father.
Murphy is rumored to be on the radar of Three Lions boss Thomas Tuchel, who was in attendance at St. James' Park last weekend as Newcastle United thrashed Manchester United, with the 30-year-old registering his tenth assist of the season.
As Murphy's stock continues to rise, a battle for his international allegiance could be brewing, with Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle keen to persuade him to pledge his future to the three-time African champions.
The Norwich City academy product has been provisionally cap-tied to England for twelve years, but has been in the international wilderness since June 2017 when he appeared against Germany in the semifinals of the U21 Euro.
Only Cole Palmer (Chelsea) and Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa) have more goal contributions than Murphy among English players, with his tally standing at eight goals and 11 assists.
Following the Magpies’ impressive win over Crystal Palace on Wednesday night, Barnes praised Murphy's influence both on and off the pitch.
"He's such a character in the changing room and deserves everything he's getting. I'm joining the petition [to get him in the England squad]," Harvey Barnes was quoted as saying by The BBC.
Newcastle United have a history of producing Super Eagles stars, with past players like Obafemi Martins, Celestine Babayaro and Shola Ameobi all donning the Nigerian jersey.
