Sadiq, Valencia's saviour: Coach Corberan shuts down release clause talks after striker's crucial goal
Published: April 20, 2025
Valencia head coach Carlos Corberan has addressed the decision to start Nigerian striker Sadiq Umar on the bench during the club's 1-1 draw against Rayo Vallecano, dismissing reports that the move was linked to a contract clause aimed at limiting the player’s minutes.
Rumours circulated prior to the match suggesting that Valencia were planning to reduce Sadiq’s playing time due to a potential release clause in his loan agreement from Real Sociedad.
However, Corberan strongly refuted those claims, attributing the decision to tactical considerations and injury-related adjustments.
Sadiq, who joined Los Che on loan during the winter transfer window, has been a vital figure for the club in their push up the La Liga table.
Since arriving at the Mestalla, the Nigerian international has scored five goals in 12 league appearances, helping the team move away from relegation fears and into contention for European qualification.
Despite being named among the substitutes, Sadiq came on to rescue a valuable point for Valencia with a crucial goal on Saturday.
Speaking after the match, Corberan dismissed claims that Valencia are managing Sadiq’s minutes due to a clause in his contract, instead pointing to Rayo Vallecano’s tactical setup as the real reason behind the decision.
"At no point have this club placed any limits on any player. In fact, in the Real Sociedad game, it was an injury that prevented Sadiq from playing," he was quoted as saying by Valencia's official website.
"Imagine the level of commitment we have to achieving the objective. I've never had any limitations; quite the opposite."
Sadiq’s impact since joining Valencia has reignited discussions over his future at the Mestalla, with reports indicating that Valencia are considering making his move permanent in the upcoming summer window.
The 28-year-old forward will be hoping to maintain his form and help propel Valencia into European competition as the season draws to a close.
