Youngest Nigerian to score for Chelsea in PL: Tyrique George smashes record held by Chukwuemeka
Published: April 20, 2025
Carney Chukwuemeka's record as the youngest Nigeria-eligible player to score for Chelsea in the English Premier League didn't last long as talented London-born winger Tyrique George smashed it on Easter Sunday, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.
Chukwuemeka, a player of interest to Super Eagles boss Eric Chelle, set the previous record on August 20, 2023 when he found the net during Chelsea's 3-1 loss to West Ham United, aged 19 years and 304 days.
Ten days after scoring his first senior goal to become the youngest Nigeria-eligible player to score for Chelsea in European competition, George entered the history books again.
Aged 19 years and 75 days today, the Blues academy graduate put his name on the score sheet to inspire Chelsea to a comeback win over Alex Iwobi's Fulham.
Five minutes after replacing Nicolas Jackson, George changed the momentum of the game, drilling the ball into the bottom corner to bring Chelsea back on terms, before Pedro Neto scored in stoppage time to seal the win.
Only three Nigerian teenagers have managed to score for Chelsea in the Premier League, namely George, Chukwuemeka and Atlanta Olympics gold medalist Celestine Babayaro.
Babayaro set the record as the youngest Nigerian to score for Chelsea in the Premier League at 19 years and 358 days old on August 22, 1998 and the record stood for 25 years before it was surpassed by Chukwuemeka.
In December 2024, Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca handed George a permanent promotion to the first team.
This season, George has recorded six goal involvements (2 goals, 4 assists) in twenty matches across all competitions for Chelsea's first team.
