'Believe in yourselves' - Ex-Flying Eagles striker backs Nigeria U20 squad for Afcon glory
Published: April 21, 2025
Former Flying Eagles striker, Wasiu Alalade, has extended his support to Nigeria's U20 team, urging them to believe in their abilities as they prepare for the 2025 AFCON U20 tournament.
The Nigerian team has been drawn into a competitive group alongside Tunisia, Morocco, and Kenya, with their group matches set to kick off soon.
The Flying Eagles will begin their campaign with a warm-up series in Egypt, leading to their first group match against Tunisia on May 1.
This will be followed by encounters with Morocco on May 4 and Kenya on May 7.
To secure a spot at the FIFA World Cup, Nigeria must reach at least the semifinals of the tournament, a feat Alalade believes is achievable through commitment and dedication.
Alalade emphasized the importance of readiness and adherence to the coaching staff's strategies.
"They have to be ready for it and they have to face the challenge. They have to concentrate to the coaches pattern and style," he told allnigeriasoccer.com.
Alalade also expressed confidence in the team's capabilities, encouraging the Flying Eagles to foster self-belief.
"They should believe in themselves they want to qualify and I know that by God's grace they will qualify."
The Flying Eagles secured their spot in the AFCON tournament after a commendable performance at the WAFU Zone B tournament, where they bounced back from a disappointing start against Burkina Faso to clinch the title with a 2-1 victory over Ghana in the final.
